Biotechnology- and Medical Jobs at the David H. Koch Institute at MIT

By Pejman Kian on 29.03.2011

David H. Koch Institute is an excellent cancer research center linked with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at Cambridge, Boston, USA. The Institute was founded in 2007 and replaced the MIT Center for Cancer Research (CCR) in 2010.

Since its foundation in 1974 by Prof. S. Luria, CCR has made huge contributions towards the cancer research which include:

Identification of the particular molecules that resulted in the two first anti-cancer drugs: Herceptin and Gleevec

Separation of the actual first human cancer genes

Detection of extra cellular matrix parts and their particular receptors, which play a crucial role in metastasis

Research and development of novel materials for continual delivery of anti-cancer medicine.

For about three generations, CCR is a huge pillar of MIT's endeavours to overcome cancer. It has produced 5 Nobel Prize winners along with the a variety of important findings which have helped to form the look of molecular biology.

The Koch Institute consists of over 40 laboratories and more than 500 scientists. The research staff comprises of cancer scientists, chemists and computer scientists, all committed of providing the most advanced technology for the battle against cancer.

It is also intensely committed to educate the upcoming generation of cancer experts. The new building of the Koch Institute is specially designed to promote interaction and cooperation amongst biologists and engineers.

It is committed to cross-disciplinary research, which will certainly reduce the time needed to transform innovative developments directly into the advantages for patients.

The Koch Institute features 11 key facilities that offer important scientific services to the faculties. A number of the facilities provide training programs, which allow Koch Institute members, students, and postdoctoral fellows to obtain the extra technical and intellectual knowledge required to advance their careers.

Scientists interested in employment should contact each department individually. The following postdoctoral fellowships are available:

Mazumdar-Shaw International Oncology Fellowships

It is a program in collaboration with India concentrating on cancer research. It provides opportunities for postdoctoral scientists, to embark on cancer research at the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research. Biocon, India funds this program.

The Wellcome Trust-MIT Postdoctoral Fellowships

This program provide financial assistance for recently postdoctoral scientists to gain experience at the interface of biology/medicine and mathematics, engineering, computer, physical or chemical sciences. The programs start initially at MIT, followed by 12 to 24 months in Great Britain.

The candidates should be on the point of submittal of their thesis or alternatively have approximately, a maximum of three years" postdoctoral experience from the date of the viva. Industrial experiences will be taken into consideration.
