Howard Hughes Medical Institute is a not for profit medical research enterprise that stands among the most significant philanthropies in the United States. It is based in Chevy Chase, Montgomery County, Maryland. It acts as an expert in promoting and developing biomedical research.

The Hughes science laboratories are located in 72 U.S. research institutes and medical hospitals and around 700 postdoctoral researchers organize the educational programs of those institutes.

In some instances the Institute provided in the past funding for about 50 exceptional scientists over a period of six years to carry out their research without the need of obtaining year after year additional grants. Their support strategy is not only bound for the United States but also internationally, where scientists are supported in research areas that benefit the entire scientific spectrum.

In recent years a new research center called "The Janelia Farm Research Campus" was launched in Ashburn, Virginia. The activities of the Center are focused on the principles of data processing by neuronal circuits, imaging techniques and analysis.

Today around 330 researchers are working at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and among those are 13 Nobel laureates and 147 active members of the National Academy of Sciences.

It also supports exceptional candidates for their scientific programs who would not normally be eligible for obtaining federal grants.

Another interesting Center is the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, which is based in Kansas City, Missouri and close to the University of Missouri. It is an endowment structured scientific research institute and independent of any federal grant program. The assets are managed by a company called American Century Investments. So far, it has invested over $850 million primarily for biomedical research.

The philosophy of this medical enterprise is to attract the most intelligent scientists who personify the high standards of the Institute by striving to brilliance.

It has about 20 distinct research programs that include proteomics, software imaging, and bioinformatics with around 350 scientific staff.

The research is mostly concentrated on genetic model organisms, cell characteristics, and dysfunction.

In addition the Stowers partners set up the company “BioMed Valley Discoveries”, which is a translational research provider. The objective is to enhance the research of medical related topics that are usually regarded as risky and expensive for the biotech industry. These could be anything from cancer to infectious diseases.

Opportunities are available at this Center for PhD, Postdoc and senior candidates. Presently, the Institute is looking for Bioinformatician, Head of Computational Biology, and Postdocs with a degree in any related subjects such as molecular biology, molecular neuroscience, genetics, immunology, and electrophysiology.

A PhD or MSc is required in Bioinformatics with experience in one of those languages (PERL, Unix shell, Python). An understanding of coding, deploying, and statistical data analysis is also expected.

The institute provides assistance for obtaining visa for selected candidates.
