Shanghai Institutes of Biological Sciences (SIBS) was founded in 1999 and grew to become one of the very first experimental units associated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
It has attracted and fostered a number of very experienced research scientists and developed a scientific strength with innovation potential. It has 8 research institutes with 12 key laboratories.

SIBS actively supported overseas collaboration, sophisticated innovation, integrated technology transfer knowledge, which in turn led to fast, and balanced growth of technological research and exceptional progress and attained a number of unique inventions.
In addition, it adopted the analysis method of highlighting quality as opposed to quantity in research, and steadily introduced the international expert assessment panel system.
SIBS's vision is to create a strong international superiority in biomedicine by promoting the advancement of biotechnology sector and supporting high-quality biotechnology scientists in China.
It is also a place of great achievements such as the world first synthetic Crystalline Bovine Insulin and the discovery of China's first acknowledged revolutionary anti-malaria drug "Artemisinin" or the very first finished artificial parthenogenesis of the toad oocyte.
Furthermore, SIBS and its associated organizations have taken the lead in cutting-edge biotechnology research on genetic engineering in China.
The Institute plans to establish a new pharmaceutical innovation system to target new medicines for specific diseases. This will include research on molecular components on the main medical conditions of Chinese, focus on R&D of biological medications and substances for clinical functions.
SIBS tries to expand international cooperation in scientific research and their international associates have jointly undertaken a large number of collaborative assignments including European union Framework Program.
It has also a number of joint overseas research institutes such as the Institute Pasteur of Shanghai/France, the CAS-Max Planck Society Partner Institute for Computational Biology and UC Berkeley.
It offers a master-doctoral program with excellent courses. There are about 102 postdoctoral researchers at the institute.
